Default type "/event" to know when it's starting

We just had the Halloween special event. I knew that the mad King would be with us at a certain day, but no idea at what time in the three-hour rotation.

So I asked around: "When is the Mad King coming?" Hence came the reply: "Check the wiki, you N00b!!!" - N00b?!? why you little... SO I checked about the schedule in wiki; and there it had the different time zones and all, which was ok (after calculating to my GMT+8 time and adjustments to the next activity).

But how about knowing when a special event is going to start in-game? No checking a web site, no time-zone fuss (all in GW-Time), nor asking around.

Type /event and something like this is displayed:

- While an event hasn't started yet: "The next special event will be Wintersday, from December x to January x."

- Within the event time frame: "Wintersday special will begin in Lion's Arch and Kamadan in 0 hour(s) and 30 minutes."

- When the activity takes place: "Wintersday special in Lion's Arch and Kamadan will continue for the next 14 minute(s)."

- When the event ends: "The next special event will be Canthan New Year, from date x to date y."

So, next time someone asks "When is the Mad King coming?" Someone answers: "Type /event, you N00b!!!"...

But be warned, ArenaNet will probably nerf it if they add it, so that you need to type it again and again until you do it 100,000 times to gain the Event title and will then be told how long it is, and it will reset to 0 whenever an event ends. And it won't work for Ritualists, Paragons, or Mesmers.

Though, it might get a bit hairy saying when events are going to start in several months.

I actually agree with you this time

Some people don't know how to calculate timezones... I'm not one of them, but whenever someone does ask about it in local chat, I always answer them. This would prevent a lot of grieving and bashing.

/signed nice idea^^

not really needed but by same way neither is /favor

you can always go to toa and check like you can go on wiki and check times.

personalyl i have a little touble with gmt times when its daylight savings, not really told much about it so i get a wee bit confused so this would reassure me

+ how many times have yoyu seen people in towns asking "wen does event start?", beisng asked every 10 secounds by a differant person each time, this would help

You people /notsigning apparently turn off local when events start, because God knows that all I heard on Halloween was "How much time until Mad King arrives?" "Is he coming today or tomorrow?" "Does he come every hour?" "What are we getting for being here?" and so on. Jesus.

I don't mind being helpful and answering questions, but this stuff happens every time ANet does something special for us, and it's constant. It's way past obnoxious. Obviously there's a large amount of people NOT checking the wiki or webpage, and most of them will just whine until they get their info anyway, no matter how many times you tell them to go somewhere else. The announcement scroll when you first turn the game on only tells you something cool is happening without giving specifics like where to go and when to be there. These people, obviously, are halfway into the game, so they log right in and begin to spam local for details.

/event would help so much. Having a little advance notice on festivals would be useful for working stiffs like me, even if it's only a week or two. And we could tell people to type it to learn what, where, and when. Saves so much time.

instead of "check the wiki you n00b", you get "type /event you n00b"

We had to agree on something eventually. Thanks!

The next ones on the other hand...

I guess you guys are committed enough to the game to go out there and get the information. But as others are pointing out, a lot of other players don't want to, don't care or just find it more convenient to ask around. Not everyone is used to timezones also. Type /event would be quite useful because it is simpler to understand and act upon it.

We would actually have a universal in-game time zone for everyone to get immediate access to. Imagine that, a tool that would put every player in the same time frame; no PST, PDT, GMT and whatnot... but a single GWT (Guild Wars Time).

Sometimes we lose track on our own expertise of the game and think that everyone else that do not engage in forums and such are as skillful. Genofreek said it best:
